Long commutes to work, stressful moments at work, home, life – sometimes we just want to unwind, de-stress and relax. When describing stress, Kumar (2008) describes stress as the opposite of relaxation. Kumar (2008, p. 401) later states that Yoga Nidra is probably the “best-known technique to induce complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation.”
Saraswati (2001) explains that in Sanskrit, Yoga means one-pointed awareness and Nidra means sleep. Therefore, Yoga Nidra could be thought of as aware-sleep.
The founder of Yoga Nidra, Sawami Satyanandra Saraswati, regards Yoga Nidra as a technique where you can relax consciously (Saraswati, 2001). The distinction of relaxing consciously as opposed to sleeping is further emphasized by Saraswati (2001) when he asserts that absolute relaxation requires that you stay aware.
