What Exactly is Yoga Nidra Anyway?

YogaNidraBlog

Long commutes to work, stressful moments at work, home, life – sometimes we just want to unwind, de-stress and relax. When describing stress, Kumar (2008) describes stress as the opposite of relaxation. Kumar (2008, p. 401) later states that Yoga Nidra is probably the “best-known technique to induce complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation.”

Saraswati (2001) explains that in Sanskrit, Yoga means one-pointed awareness and Nidra means sleep. Therefore, Yoga Nidra could be thought of as aware-sleep.

The founder of Yoga Nidra, Sawami Satyanandra Saraswati, regards Yoga Nidra as a technique where you can relax consciously (Saraswati, 2001). The distinction of relaxing consciously as opposed to sleeping is further emphasized by Saraswati (2001) when he asserts that absolute relaxation requires that you stay aware.

Yoga Garden LLC (Saint Cloud, FL) will begin offering Yoga Nidra classes on August 3rd, 2016. This is an exciting development for our school. Our yoga studio shares a space with a martial art studio (when they are not there); therefore, our classes have the benefit of using soft, full floor mats during class. Give us a call and reserve your spot at our next Yoga Nidra class. We look forward to having you relax with us!
